This is my take on watching “foreign” movies and what to make of what you experience from them essentially

When you watch a movie from a country or culture that is not yours, you should hold no delusions that you are “learning” or gaining extraordinary insight into that culture, its customs and its peoples. If you were to watch an Indonesian movie then you have done just that— you have not risen as an expert of the culture. You are watching a deliberately produced project that is reflective of its creators artistic expression not a tutorial about their nation. You must see the movie at the most as a channel of communication for the creators but not overly extrapolate it to make generalizing statements about entire nations and peoples. You are a viewer of a movie so remain just that.
